It’s an immersive hiking experience where every step moves through tea plantations, forest tracks, local villages, sweeping viewpoints, and rich legacy estates. Whether you choose to complete all 22 stages over many days, or take just a few favored legs, the trail offers something for every hiker.

This ensures cool, clear weather and perfect conditions for long treks across different regions of the trail. Each section can typically take 4–6 hours a day, allowing you to explore at your own rhythm, engage with tea pickers, and savor authentic local cuisine at your leisure.

Connecting with the Heart of Sri Lanka

Along these historic paths, you'll encounter the unparalleled warmth of the Sri Lankan people. From diligent plantation workers sharing family stories passed down through generations, to skilled artisans crafting traditional tea baskets with ancient techniques, their genuine kindness and boundless hospitality truly embody the spirit of "Ayubowan"—the cherished Sri Lankan greeting that beautifully translates to "May you live long."

Planning Tips & Safety for Your Journey

  • The trail is officially managed and clearly divided into stages. Using the official Pekoe Trail App and passes is highly recommended for navigation and safety.

URGENT TRAIL ADVISORY & SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT

Issued by thepekoetrail.org Official Website

The Department of Meteorology has forecast intense rainfall exceeding 250mm across Sri Lanka between 16–28 October, linked to the strengthening of the northeast monsoon. This may lead to major flooding, landslides, and disruptions to trail routes, particularly in the Central Highlands.

All hikers and trail operators are strongly advised to:

  1. Closely monitor Met Department weather updates and official alerts.
  2. Strictly follow instructions issued by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and local authorities.
  3. Be prepared for possible evacuation in high-risk areas.
  4. Postpone or entirely avoid hiking activities along The Pekoe Trail during this critical period.

Due to changing weather conditions in the Central Highlands, hikers are also advised to exercise extra caution on the following stages even outside this period of intense rain: Stage 2, 3, 4, 9, 12, 17 & 18. Trails may be slippery, visibility can be reduced, and sudden rainfall is always a possibility.

Respect the trail and its communities: Always stick to marked paths, avoid littering, and do not give money to children. Let’s support local communities in sustainable and respectful ways!
